Ponte Vittorio Emanuele I (Circoscrizione 1)

?? Kosuth has chosen for his installation Doble Passage, along the Vittorio Emanuele I Bridge, two neon writings reproducing quotes by Italo Calvino and Friedrich Nietzsche from Invisible Cities and Thus Spoke Zarathustra, respectively. Both philosophers, who loved Turin and identified themselves with the city, announce philosophical considerations through metaphors about the bridge. Nietzsche: “What is great in man is that he is a bridge and not a goal: what is lovable in man is that he is an OVER-GOING and a DOWN-GOING. I love those that know not how to live except as down-goers, for they are the over-goers. I love the great despisers, because they are the great adorers, and arrows of longing for the other shore.” Calvino:  “Marco Polo describes a bridge, stone by stone. ‘But which is the stone that supports the bridge?’ Kublai Khan asks. ‘The bridge is not supported by one stone or another,’ Marco answers, ‘but by the line of the arch that they form.’

Kublai Khan remains silent, reflecting. Then he adds: ‘Why do you speak to me of the stones? It is only the arch that matters to me.’ Polo answers: ‘Without stones there is no arch”.

L’artista ha scelto per la sua installazione, lungo il ponte Vittorio Emanuele I ai Murazzi, due scritte al neon che riproducono frasi di Italo Calvino e di Friedrich Nietzsche, tratte rispettivamente da Le città invisibili e da Così parlò Zarathustra. Nelle frasi, i due scrittori, che amarono Torino e che s’identificarono con la città, fanno considerazioni filosofiche attraverso metafore sul ponte. Nietzsche: “La grandezza dell’uomo è di essere un ponte e non uno scopo: nell’uomo si può amare che egli sia una transizione e un tramonto. Io amo coloro che non sanno vivere se non tramontano, poiché essi sono una transizione. Io amo gli uomini del grande disprezzo, perché essi sono anche gli uomini della grande venerazione e frecce che anelano all’altra riva”. Calvino: “Marco Polo descrive un ponte, pietra per pietra. Ma qual è la pietra che sostiene il ponte? Chiede Kublai Kan. Il ponte non è sostenuto da questa o quella pietra, risponde Marco, ma dalla linea dell’arco che esse formano. Kublai Kan rimane silenzioso, riflettendo. Poi soggiunge: Perché mi parli delle pietre? È solo dell’arco che m’importa”.
